✰✰✰SYNOPSIS✰✰✰

Will their arrangement ever be enough?

Relationships are not a priority for restaurateur Esteban Galiano, and when he sees Sonia Kennedy at a party, he plans to make her a conquest in a long line of many. But she rebuffs his advances and forces him to adjust—determined to meet the challenge and do whatever he must to make her his.

All her life, Sonia’s beauty has caused unnecessary problems, and right now she needs a job, not a suitor. When Esteban makes an indecent proposal, her first instinct is to turn him down. But soon she’s rethinking her response. Maybe it’s time for her to use what she’s got, to get what she wants.

excerpt

Esteban walked through the house to the courtyard in the back. He’d had a long day, but already felt better walking into the house and knowing Sonia was there. He found her swimming laps in the Olympic-size pool.

Setting the snifter of brandy he’d poured himself on the patio table, he took a seat in one of the cushioned wicker chairs and stretched his legs. From here, he had a good view of her gliding through the water with graceful strokes.

She exercised regularly, jogging South Beach or Star Island, and when they traveled, she made use of the gyms at the hotels where they stayed, but she preferred to get her exercise outdoors. Sometimes they raced each other in the pool, and although she gave it her best, he always won. He was simply a better and stronger swimmer, and the one time he let her win, she’d not been pleased. It was one of the few times he ever saw her upset, because she usually kept a genial disposition.

He couldn’t have picked a better woman to be his mistress. His friends liked her, and his household staff loved her—clearly preferring her to him. His mouth turned into a wry twist. Dolores spoke fondly of her, and he was pretty sure Marta would adopt her if she could. She trusted Sonia completely. Both of his drivers, Abel and the one here, visibly lit up when she appeared. “Where to, ma’am?” Abel had asked one night, completely ignoring the fact that Esteban was standing right beside her.

Sonia cruised up and stood in the pool, resting her forearms on the edge. “How was your trip?” She sounded a little out of breath, but not winded.

“Very successful.” The meeting had gone surprisingly well, and the real estate developer, a man by the name of Renaldo, and his wife had agreed to come by for dinner. “I’m certain I’ll be able to seal the deal of opening two restaurants in their mixed-used developments—the one in São Paulo and the one they plan for here.”

“Are you coming in?”

“No. Why don’t you come out? I have something for you.” Esteban removed the dark, velvet-covered square box from his pocket and set it on the table.

Q+A

Describe More Than a Mistress in 3 words.

Emotional. Sensual. Passionate.

What was the best thing about writing this book?

The research is my weakness! I can get caught up in the research of a book and have to not only rein myself in, but make sure I don’t inject too much information into the story. I enjoyed learning about wines, the lives and skills of sommeliers, and their training. I dribbled bits and pieces into the story, such as the proper way to serve wine when it’s ordered in a restaurant, or the fact that Malbec is Argentina’s most popular wine export.

Who is your favorite character from this book and why?

I had to think about that for a minute, but I think my favorite character is Sonia. She was beautiful but not full of herself. She has a sense of humor, was friendly, and well liked. Esteban’s friends and his staff fell in love with her, and as a result she ended up taking on more than just a mistress role in his life. She essentially took on the role of a wife or partner, and even one of their guests thought they were married. She was his hostess and managed his homes and events, in conjunction with his staff. She’s someone I could see myself being friends with.

Where did the inspiration for this book come from?

Honestly, I can’t remember, lol. The story has been on my mind for at least four years, and I finally decided to write it this year to get it out of my head. I knew I wanted to write a love story that started out in an unconventional way but blossomed into something more meaningful and permanent. You’ll see how they meet, how they’re compatible, but also the conflict that arises as their feelings shift and the initial arrangement of mistress/benefactor creates friction in their relationship. But at the end of the day, there’s no doubt that they love each other deeply.

What next can we expect from you?

I’m working on two stories at the same time, but eventually one will take precedence as the ideas come to me more easily. That’s usually what happens. The first is That Time in Venice, part of the Love Unexpected series. The other book is Seasoned. The main characters are all in the forties or older and the story encompasses one summer and we see them falling in love.
