Happy Monday!! Today, My Reading Nook is shining the spotlight on Authoress Nicole Falls. She’s a new author, yet definitely someone you need to check out if you aren’t already a fan, like me ;)!
First, let’s wish Nicole a happy belated book birthday.🍾 Her newest release, Smitten, dropped onto our Kindles on Friday, March 17th. Available for purchase or to borrow through Kindle Unlimited.
Let’s jump right in and get to know Ms. Falls, shall we!
Hi Nicole! Welcome to My Reading Nook! To begin, tell us a little about yourself and your writing.
For as long as I can remember, a book has been a constant companion throughout my entire life. And in the other hand was always a pen. It’s a natural inclination for readers to be writers, but not necessarily the path that all readers need to take. After being told for over twenty years by people far and wide (ha!), I’ve decided to try my hand at writing.
I’m particularly interested in writing Black romance and Black women’s fiction because that’s where I cut my teeth growing up. Of course, I read your Babysitters and Sweet Valleys, but I really hit my stride when I was gifted a box of books by a co-worker of my father’s. In it was A Valentine’s Kiss which featured short stories from Brenda Jackson, Carla Fredd and Felicia Mason and Friends and Lovers by Eric Jerome Dickey. I’d never read about people who looked like me prior to that as crazy as it sounds. I probably read those books a thousand times as I struggled to write my epic coming of age novel Underscore, which will never see the light of day. LMAO!
I’ve left behind the writings of all the aforementioned authors, but the feelings their works evoked in me always stayed near. And continue to inspire my writing today. I can only hope to bring out a fraction of the feelings these writers brought out in me to a new crop of readers.
Describe yourself in 4 words.
Silly, charming, intelligent and loyal.
Describe your writing style in 6 words.
Writing shit down; hoping something sticks.
Hahahaha, seriously. That’s it. I write what comes and hope the people enjoy it. I was lucky in that so many enjoyed the first work I released so I hope I don’t fall into the sophomore slump with the second.
Who/what inspires you and/or your writing?
I’m personally inspired by the triumphs of others I witness daily, but my writing is largely inspired by music. I’ve got so many little things I’ve started after getting in the zone from listening to the music of some of my faves.
If your life were a book, what would the title be?
I Don’t Take Naps, I Go to Sleep: A Memoir
As a new author, what’s the biggest challenge you’ve faced thus far?
Finding the time to do promo. I’m so busy in my personal life (working full time + grad school), it’s hard for me to carve out enough time to do true blue, grassroots promotion. I do myself such a disservice here. It’s on my list of things to improve this year though.
What is your biggest triumph of 2017 thus far?
Hmmmm. This is a good question, probably successfully removing dairy from my diet. Cow’s milk is not my friend. I miss pizza, ice cream and mac & cheese (OMG!) so much, though.
What do you read?
A lil bit of everything, honestly. My heart lies in literary fic, but my soul thrives in romance. I’ve been doing less reading lately though, as my writing ramps up. Now that I’ve finished my latest, I cant wait to spend a few weeks catching up. My Kindle app overflows with good stuff just waiting to be read.
What kind of music do you listen to when writing?
Usually A LOT of late 90s/early 2000s r&b. Faith Evans, Mary J., Tamia, one hit wonder girl groups like KutKlose & Mokenstef—that’s my wheelhouse. I just be grooving and singing and getting these words down.
If you could only take only one book on a trip, what book would you take? Why?
My absolute favorite book of all time—Zora Neale Hurston’s Their Eyes Were Watching God. That is A BOOK…okay?! It’s seriously a book I could read a billion times & never get tired of. ZNH is one of my writer sheros whose work I obsessively read & reread; determined to unearth something I may have missed on previous readings.
What author, living or dead, would you like to have a night on the town with?
Ooh this is a great question! I’d say Tayari Jones–I feel like we’d have great chats over cocktails. I got a chance to escort her at a literary fest a few years ago & she was the dopest.
Do you have a favorite book or character that you’ve written?
Despite her being nothing like me, I really grew to like Celena from Smitten. She took a minute to grow on me because I had to fight all of my instincts and write her true to form instead of interjecting myself in there…and it was difficult for me at places. A few times I wanted to be like, “Girl. Sis. WYD?!”
What book do you wish you had written?
Honestly? None that’ve been published. This is gonna sound corny, but I wholeheartedly believe that the stories take root with who is supposed to bring them forth into the world. It’s fun to think about different ways I would have written a story, but there’s not been a book yet where I was like “dang! why couldn’t I have written that?!”
Unless we’re talking wishing having written based on the crap ton of money generated by said book then I totally wish I’d written Fifty Shades of Gray.
Describe your latest book, Smitten, in 3 words?
On. My. Nerves! HAHAHAHA–kidding! Hmmmm…I’d say it’s sincere, corny & a bit of a slow burn. That’s more than 3 words huh? My bad…I’m not good at limits.
What/who inspired this book/series?
The first book in the series was actually just supposed to be a short story. I’d had this dream and surprisingly I remembered it when I woke up (which was odd bc I never remember my dreams), but the events that unfolded in the dream were left unresolved and I kept thinking about all of the what ifs. Which sparked my creativity and hence the short. But then the characters from the short wouldn’t shut up and so it became a full fledged novella.
What next can we expect from you?
Another book in this series, same universe; different characters. Secondary characters keep calling out while I’m in the midst of the primary story, so I’ma keep telling their stories ’til the next set of folks kick them out.

This girl was out of her damned mind. It was the only explanation for how she thought I was going to be okay with the bomb she’d just dropped on me. We’d been in the car for a few minutes, riding in silence before I finally spoke up.
“This isn’t a good idea,” I said
“The best adventures never are,” Cadence replied with a sly grin.
“So what is the set up, exactly?”
“The name is self explanatory, my G. Speed dating. Undetermined number of eligible bachelors. Limited amount of time. Endless amounts of shiggles.”
“Did I? Was I high?”
She reached up to the visor, pulling down a sheet of paper. “Read this.”
“Unfold and read it.”
“I, Celena Marie Payne, do solemnly swear that as of the drafting of this contract I am of sober mind.”
“See. Not high. Of sober mind. Keep reading.”
“You sure you didn’t forge my signature?”
She rolled her eyes, turning off of the road into a parking structure in the center of town.
“I vow to allow either Cadence Melody McPherson or Devorah Nicole Lee choose an adventure on which I have to embark, no questions asked. I had to have been high when I agreed to this. Or I thought you heffas meant a legit adventure and not whatever the hell this speed dating malarkey would turn out to be.”
Cadence rolled her eyes again and said, “What’s the worst that can happen, Cel? Unclench and try to enjoy yourself. Jeez.”
“I’m am not cle—“
“Let’s not even continue that lie, sis.”
I wasn’t clenched. I didn’t clench. Or at least I didn’t used to clench. I was always known as the easygoing, friendly, trust a stranger to use my cell phone and not run off with it member of our gang. Until everything I knew to be true came crashing down around me and I was left to make sense of the wreckage. Ok, so…I might have been leaning a bit into my hyperbolic side right now, just slightly, because I was heartbroken. Or at least I should be heartbroken? I’m not quite certain. I just knew that the man I had been dating for the past nineteen months up and decided that not only would he fuck me over personally, but that he’d let it bleed over into our professional relationship as well.
Everyone told me not to shit where I ate and I resisted for as long as I could until Jacob Parker finally wore me down. Handsome, intelligent, from money, but most of all ridiculously funny with a razor sharp tongue—my kryptonite. Lord knows I cannot resist a man with a slick mouth. That’s what drew me to Jacob initially. We met due to our companies doing business together. I became the lead account executive for Parker and Associates, so that meant a lot of one on one time spent in meetings strategizing, developing plans of attack and so on and so forth. One of those strategy sessions led to us grabbing dinner. Then dinner became a regular occurrence. Next thing I knew I was becoming increasingly charmed by Jacob. I had no designs on actually making a move, but one night he made it for me.
We were finishing up a meeting and I was getting ready to leave. He held my coat for me, as was our usual custom. He claimed his mama – God rest her soul – had raised a gentleman. One minute he was helping me into my trench coat and the next we were wrapped in a passionate embrace sharing one of the hottest kisses I’d ever been a part of in my life.
Jacob excelled at kissing. Where most men I’d been involved with treated it like something to prime the pump, he took his time, savoring me as if I were a rare wine or expensive chocolate. His lips against mine were firm and insistent, nibbling softly as he cradled my chin in his hand. I opened my mouth to ask what exactly he thought he was doing and he took that as an opportunity to slide his tongue between my lips, daring mine to come out and play. His hands moved from cupping my face; down to my hips where he pulled me flush against his body. Resistance was futile as I gave myself over to the swirling sensation that’d begun in my belly and traveled south with each nibble, swipe and suck of the kiss.
That night…that kiss…everything changed then.
