Everything I do is for my daughter. I only want the best for her life. So when her father finally decided that after three years he wanted to get to know her, I put my feelings aside and allowed him in. Not to be with me, but to be a daddy to her. Well, a few things came with him that I wasn’t prepared for—a crazy ass girlfriend who wanted to guard her territory at any cost and a fine ass uncle that made it clear he wanted my attention.

My sister/friend Laney is telling me to go for it, but my conscience is messing with me on a daily and telling me that it’s just too close for comfort. But the heart wants what the heart wants and before long, I start to feel that pull toward this man who makes me feel like no other man ever has.

When I first saw Malina, I knew I had to have her. Yeah, there’s code that says if your family has touched the merchandise, then you don’t entertain it. But Malina isn’t just any woman. Because not one woman that I’ve ever encountered made me want to reach out and touch her on sight—but she did. From the way she carried herself, to the way she looked at me, I knew that if she let me in, she would know what it was like to be loved for real . . . and by a real man.

I’m not perfect by any means. I’ve done my share of dirt. I can’t even say for sure that my dirty deeds are done. I love women . . . a lot of them. As a result, I’ve had a few babies along the way—babies that I haven’t always done right by; so I’m setting out to change that and do what a real father is supposed to do. Problem is the woman I’m “with” doesn’t really grasp the concept of what it is I’m trying to do and her reaction to it all causes a whole lot of chaos.

I’m territorial. I don’t make excuses for it. It’s who I am. And when I feel that somebody is trying to step into my zone and steal what belongs to me, I react. This chick, Malina, who opened her legs to my man and had his child, thinks she’s going to come in with her daughter and claim a spot that never belonged to her. She’s dead wrong. If I have to show her what that means, that’s what it’ll be. But she won’t like it if it does come down to that, so if I was her, I’d tread carefully.

Laney had her arms folded across her chest, leaning against the threshold of her best friend, Malina’s bedroom door. “Damn, girl!” she complained. “How long are you gon’ take? If I’d known you were around here laggin’, I woulda waited before I left my house! I coulda still been watching LMN. You know those Saturday movies that they show are hella good!”

Malina’s laugh echoed throughout her room, as she stood in her full-length mirror applying the finishing touches to her look. She snapped her neck around to where Laney stood to respond. “Girl! First of all, those movies are cheesy as fuck and don’t have a single cast member that looks like yo’ ass. And second . . . shut yo’ grumpy, compuhlainin’ ass up!” she yelled, turning back to face the mirror, and fluff around her wild mane of curls while gathering the mass all up into a curly ponytail.

Oooh, mommy, you said a bad word!

Malina shot her best friend a look through the mirror, and shook her head, in slow motion at her. “That’s because your auntie made me,” Malina reasoned with her young daughter, Mahri. Mahri was an adorable three-year-old that Malina had given birth to on her twenty-second birthday, and who was the apple of her mama’s eye. “Your auntie likes to say things to mommy, to get a reaction out of her because she doesn’t have manners like you and me, baby.”

“Okay, Mommy!” Mahri exclaimed as she burst into laughter so contagious, it always made her mother’s heart warm. “TT!” she yelled in her squeaky pitch, in between giggles, “Don’t make Mommy cuss okay?”

“Okay, lil’ mama,” Laney promised her Goddaughter. “I won’t make mommy cuss anymore. That was bad and I’m sorry. I just thought you andyour Mommy would be ready to go to the nice, biiig park when I got here, but—”

Describe Family Ties in six words.
Finding unexpected love in unexpected places.
Where did the inspiration for this book come from?
This story is semi-autobiographical. So you could say that the inspiration came from my own life story. A moment in time in my life is more like it. There are certain things taken directly from my own experiences, but there are things that I embellished greatly to make for interesting fiction.
What was the hardest thing about writing this book?
I feared transparency a lot. Being that it’s so close to me, I kept getting nervous about what readers would figure out were actual pieces of my own puzzle and which ones weren’t. It made writing the story hard at times because while it was a story that made for good fiction, it was also kind of therapy for me.
What can we expect next from you?
I’ll probably finish the interracial romance novel that I was writing before this story. I usually go where the characters take me and I was already 16,000 [words] into an IR book when this one tapped me on the shoulder. So, now I’ll probably go back to that unless another book forces its way in again. I do plan to write at least one more full length novel before the end of the year.
